Our History

CADCAI (Cairns & District Chinese Association Inc) is an active  community-based arts and heritage organisation dedicated to promoting Chinese culture in Cairns and north Queensland.  Established in 1978, CADCAI has operated as an incorporated not-for-profit organisation since 1986,  and is overseen by a management committee.

Our mission is to share and celebrate and protect the region's Chinese culture and heritage, enriching the cultural, social and economic diversity of our local community.

Held since the inaugral Year of the Monkey Street Festival in 2004, the festival showcases the north Queensland's cultural diversity and rich Chinese heritage through music, dance and cultural performances, food, market stalls, and a parade featuring the tradional Chinese dragon, lions and the 12 Zodiac Animals.

An exciting program of events is being organised for 2018, with our signature event, The Cairns Airport Chinese New Year Street Festival being held once again in Grafton St,  site of Cairns' historical Chinatown circa 1880 - 1910.  Other festival events include the Official Launch, the ANZ Bank Yum Cha, and the Chinese New year Banquet.
