Join the Chinese Community as they celebrate and welcome the New Lunar Year with a sumptuous 9 course traditional Chinese New Year Banquet.  The annual gala event includes the Molihua Dancers, traditional Lion dancing and firecrackers to ward off the evil spirits and bring good fortune. Lots of prizes and raffle draws as well!

  • Non-Members: $70 (Adult), $40 (Child 4-11 yrs)

GBRCNY Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day and marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations.

A new addition to the GBRCNY calendar The Lantern Festival will see revellers join together armed with lanterns for one unforgettable spectacle. There will be Lion & Dragon performers and music.

When the time is just right, we will light the sky with our highest hopes, deepest regrets, and fondest dreams.

This will be a visual spectacle as the lanterns are always red to symbolize good fortune and we encourage everyone to join us in writing down their wishes for the new year and lighting their lantern.

Cairns Airport Great Barrier Reef Chinese New Year Street Festival

This year’s program includes colorful Lion and Dragon performances, Chinese drumming, interactive art and cultural displays, Chinese food and a huge variety of market stalls and street food.  Children’s activities include the opportunity to feed the Lion and Chinese Craft.  

2 x Stages will provide action-packed entertainment and prize draws.  The YAPS street parade commences at 4:30 pm and is followed later in the evening by the CADCAI Street Parade the Chinese Lion and Dragon performances and firecrackers

The Cairns Airport Great Barrier Reef Chinese New Year Street Festival celebrates Tropical North Queensland’s diversity and rich Chinese heritage. It is a popular and much anticipated community event which brings new life and vibrancy into the city, enhancing the visitor experience for all.

The treasured family recipes of the Cairns Chinese Community have been revealed through video and photographs in the exhibition ‘Secret Recipes’. Working with members of the Cairns and District Chinese Association Incorporated (CADCAI), renowned photographer Glen O’Malley and ethnographic videographer Daniela Vavrova have captured the stories of this community, as they prepare symbolic culinary delights to celebrate Chinese New Year. The inevitable adaptation, cross-pollination, and refinement of these dishes speaks to the journey’s these recipes have made to become an integral part of family, friendship, and community in contemporary Australian society.

‘Secret Recipes’ is on display at KickArts Contemporary Arts Gallery One from the 10th of February to the 21st of April 2018. The official opening event featuring a performance by the Cairns and District Chinese Association Incorporated (CADCAI) Lion Dancers, will take place on Saturday the 17th of February 2018, 3-5pm.

Yixuan is a Chinese artist who creates cross culture Chinese/ Western quirky artworks of dogs with a quintessentially Chinese touch.

Hayley Gillespie - will be creating a range of portraits of dogs that she has met, told from the dogs perspective.

Stephanie Holt it a beautifully sensitive photographer taking photographic portraits of dogs in their own environments and favourite places.

Hayley Gillespie – Art Exhibition – 12 Zodiacs

Times: 7th – 23rd Feb 9am – 8pm (last entry 7pm) and 24th Feb – 3rd Mar 9am – 5pm (last entry 4pm)

Original artworks from local artist, Hayley Gillespie. The exhibition explores the meanings of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. 

There is a relationship between humans and the 12 zodiac animals. It is believed that the years represented by the animals affect the character of people in the same way as western astrology signs.  

Facts like years, strengths, weaknesses, best matches the fortunes of each sign in 2018.
The Zodiac animals are designed by Hayley Gillespie and have both Eastern and Western influences, a fusion of both cultures representing a modern multicultural Australia. They have been representing the Chinese celebrations in the Cairns community over the years.
